How can an osteopath help my baby or child is a common question we get asked. Gemma Radmall specialises in treating babies and children and joins Broadwater Osteopaths in November 2018!
Broadwater Osteopathic Practice in Worthing is pleased to announce a new member to the team, Gemma Radmall. Gemma will be joining our team as of November 16th. This post is an introduction to Gemma and her style of working. For any other queries, please call the practice on 01903 820206.
About Me
Gemma became interested in osteopathy after receiving treatment for a knee injury sustained whilst competing in Judo as a teenager.
She graduated from the British School of Osteopathy, known now as the University College of Osteopathy in 2013 with a Masters degree after four years of study.
From there Gemma worked in private practice in London and Hampshire. She simultaneously undertook post graduate training in Paediatric Osteopathy at the renowned Osteopathic Centre for Children, spurred on by how beneficial treatment was for her very premature nephew.
Now, Gemma enjoys treating patients in Sussex after returning to her home county. Her training and experience allows her to treat patients from newborns to octogenarians and beyond. Her knowledge of anatomy, physiology and her personal experience of the frustration experienced when an injury occurs helps her to treat people from office workers, those just starting out with a new sport to athletes.
When not working, Gemma can be found walking on the downs, cycling or swimming whilst enjoying spending time with family and friends. She is a keen traveller, taking every opportunity to enjoy the UK, Europe and when possible even further afield!
Pre and Post Natal Osteopathy
During pregnancy, hormonal changes in the body causing relaxation of ligaments, as well as mechanical postural changes can mean that previous aches or pains can reoccur or sometimes contribute to new problems. Treatment can be an effective way to ease and manage these symptoms during pregnancy, making you feel more comfortable. Treatment is safe during all stages of pregnancy and your osteopath will give you gentle stretches and exercises which will take into account your changing body.
Sometimes labour and delivery can place demands on your body, especially if you have a long labour or if assistance is required, like forceps or ventouse. This can be short term for some, but can be even six months post delivery. Feeding posture and lifting a growing baby can also lead to aches and pains in the neck, back and wrists. Treatment to relieve symptoms whilst giving you advice on lifting, posture and safely returning to exercise can ensure that you focus all your new little one.
Osteopathy for children
Like adults, children of all ages can benefit greatly from osteopathic treatment. Parents can contact us directly should they have any concerns, but we also receive referrals from other practitioners involved in the care of children such as GP’s, midwives, health visitors and speech and language therapists. Gemma has received specialist training, meaning she can safely and effectively examine, diagnose and treat children.
What is involved in a typical assessment of a baby/ child?
Gemma will take some details about why you’ve come to see her, which can sometimes include talking about your pregnancy and your babies delivery. She will do a full examination, for babies this is similar to their neonatal examination – checking all muscle tone, reflexes and movements with extra attention to the areas that may be associated with their symptoms. For older children, the examination will be similar but taking into account what stage they’re at with their development. They’ll be undressed to their nappy/underwear at the initial consultation. She’ll then discuss whats wrong, treatment plan and do some treatment, mostly gentle soft tissue massage and stretching and give you exercises to do at home.
Which days and times is Gemma at BOP?
Gemma will be working with us on Fridays from 2.00pm-8pm and Wednesdays from 8.30am-12.30pm. Her hours may well extend as her client list develops at the practice.
How much will treatments cost?
For babies and children under 12 years £42 initial consultations and £37 subsequent. Over 12 years £45 and £40 subsequently. 1st appointments last approximately 30-45 minutes and follow-ups 30 minutes.
