Cough and cold remedies

Remedies for coughs and colds

Just about everyone at the moment seems to have a cold, cough or flu. If you have survived it so far, you are doing well. Today’s blogpost looks at self help measures to try and combat bugs that are doing the rounds, whilst boosting our immune system and lessening inflammation too.

Try the top tips from the team and let us know of any others you have found that work for you too!

Tip 1 – Help the immune system to work well by keeping a good sleep routine and lessening stress levels.

Tip 2 – Cut down and ideally out alcohol, smoking and caffeine

Tip 3 – Eat lots of colourful fruit and veg and less processed foods. Cut down on red meats and refined products.

Tip 4 – Cut down on the sugar. Bugs love sugar and so lessening our intake, gives them less to feed on. If you need something sweet, go natural rather than refined.

Tip 5 – Look to the Med. Sunshine, relaxation and a diet of olive oil, nuts, and rich small oily fish like sardines. Leafy veg, kale and spinach, alongside colourful fruits rich in antioxidants will also help.

Tip 6 – Although you may not feel like it, exercise will help boost your immunity. Even a brief walk outside or some gentle exercise indoors. Breathing exercises can also help to calm body and mind.

Tip 7 – Speak with your local Health Food Store about supplements. There are many products on the market which can help to boost immune system health. Some are not recommended with specific medications, so it is best to check with a store or your pharmacy before you start them. Echinacea is one of the most popular of these supplements. Supplements including Vitamin A,B,C,D, E and Zinc can also help, but again should be taken after seeking individual advice. Turmeric is also a fantastic anti-inflammatory supplement, activated by black pepper, but again not suitable for everyone.

My personal saviour, through the recent cough, cold, razor blade throat and Covid has been my ‘special brew’. This consists of grated fresh root ginger, manuka honey, fresh lemon, chilli and black pepper, all infused in hot water. This receipe has been my go to potion of choice for the last few years.

I would love to know your go to bug fighter potions too!
